Every year thousands of people climb a mountain in the Italian Alps, passing the "stations of the cross" to stand at an outdoor crucifix. One tourist noticed a little trail that led beyond the cross. He fought through the rough thicket and, to his surprise, came upon another shrine, a shrine that symbolized the empty tomb. It was neglected. The brush had grown up around it. Almost everyone had gone as far as they cross, but there they stopped.

Most Christians are familiar with the events TO/AROUND the Cross; many are familiar with the events AFTER the cross, known as Easter Sunday. Few know little about the events BEYOND the Cross, or the activities of the 3 days Jesus spent buried in a borrowed tomb.

b) PROVISIONAL - "just for the unjust"

SUBSTITUTIONARY ATONEMENT - He TOOK our PLACE

JUST was CRUCIFIED - UNJUST could be JUSTIFIED

c) PURPOSEFUL - "he might bring us to God"

"Bring" - official in king's court known as Introducer. He decided who could have access to the King

Jesus was our INTRODUCER to God - RECONCILED us

2) His SPIRITUAL DESCENT (18b-19)

"Quickened" - NOT Resurrection (Body) - Spirit made alive

"Went" - Speaks of a Journey

"Prison" - "Hades" - Temporary dwelling of lost dead

Hades - County Lockup/Hell - Federal Penitentiary

B) The TRUTH He PROCLAIMED (19-20)

1) The AUDIENCE He MET (20)

Some believe "fallen angels" before the flood
