If you travel to 1101 E. Michigan Avenue, Albion, MI, you would find a State historic marker:

"The Birthplace of the Old Rugged Cross"

It was there in 1912, where George Bernard, an itinerate Methodist preacher penned those immortal words before sending them to Charles Gabriel, in Chicago, to set them to music.

The birthplace of the Old Rugged Cross is not Michigan Avenue, but on a bloody hill called Golgotha.

R. G Lee was asked if he had been to Calvary before, he replied, "Yes, more than 2000 years ago when Jesus died for me!"

O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left his glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary.

Crucifixion was the worst form of capital punishment. Reserved for the worst, most vile offenders. Began with being STRIPPED - being SCOURGED - being STAPLED. Thousands had been crucified before, but none of them could atone for the sins of humanity.

It took the RICH, RED, ROYAL, REDEEMING blood of God's RIGHTEOUS son. Hung for 6 hours, but a CAST of CHARACTERS played a part in fulfilling what God had ordained before the "foundation of the world."

Those that BOUND Him - BEAT Him - BLASPHEMED Him - BANNED Him - BURIED him

1) The VILLAINS that BELITTLED Him!

A) PIOUS Villains

3 Groups:

Sadducees - Hated His DOMINION from God

(No SUPERNATURAL) - Couldn't BIND Him UP

Pharisees - Hated His DOCTRINE of God

(No SYSTEM) - Couldn't BOX Him IN

Priests - Hated His DEITY as God

(No SONSHIP) - Couldn't BOOST Him OUT

(John 11:53) - "From that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death."

B) POLITICAL Villains

HEROD - PERSONAL PLEASURE

- (Antipas)

- Governor of Galilee

- Son of Herod the Great (Murdered babies in Jerusalem)
