Title: "One More Song To Sing" (22 of 22)
Text: Psalm 119:169-176
Author: Steve Wagers
Ira Sankey was D.L. Moody's song leader in his crusades. Sankey was traveling by steamboat on Christmas Eve 1875. Someone requested he sing, "Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us." When he finished, a man asked Sankey if he served in the Union Army, and if he remembered serving picket duty along a fence on night in 1862. Sankey answered "YES" to both.
The man then explained, "I was serving in the Confederate Army. When I saw you standing at your post, I raised my gun and took aim. I was standing in the shadow, completely concealed, while the full light of the moon was falling upon you. At that instant, you raised your eyes to Heaven and began to sing that same song. I said to myself, 'Let him sing his song to the end, and I will shoot him afterwards.' I heard the words"
We are Thine,
Do Thou befriend us us,
Be the Guardian of our way.
I began to think of my childhood and my God-fearing mother who sang that song to me. When you finished, it was impossible for me to rake aim again. I thought, 'The Lord who is able to save that man from certain death must surely be great and mighty.'"
In the 22nd and final stanza, the Psalmist has one more song to sing. He has sobbed, sighed, and sung his way through the Hebrew alphabet of this immortal Psalm. He has found that, through every up and down of the journey, the Word of God was the Water to Cleanse him, the Milk to Nourish him, the Honey to Delight him, and the Light to Guide him.
Charles Simeon - "It is a star of the first and greatest magnitude in the firmament of the Psalms."
John Philipps - "It is the alphabet of Divine Love."
If you had one final song to sing, what would it be? Would it tell of your story? Would it tell of His glory? Let's listen to the Psalmist's final song.
