Title: "In Pursuit of Peace" (21 of 22)
Text: Psalm 119:161-168
Author: Steve Wagers

Every year, thousands of people visit the Winchester Mansion in San Jose, California. This massive structure was built by Sarah Winchester, the widow of the gun company owner. For 38 years, from 1884 until her death in 1922, the house was under constant construction. Teams of carpenters, masons, and other workers were employed around the clock. Mrs. Winchester believed that she was haunted or would be haunted by the ghosts of those killed by her husband's weapons unless she kept building her house. Others said she believed that she would not die as long as she was building her house.

Whatever the reason, she continued ordering more renovations up until her death. There are more than 10,000 windows in the Mansion, and some 160 rooms in total. It is estimated that she spent more than $70 million, in today's economy, on largely pointless construction, all in a desperate search for peace.

In the 21st stanza, we find the Psalmist looking for peace, as well as living in peace. He has found the only true source of peace - the Word of God.

Lamoyne Sharp: "How barren and bankrupt are many in these days because of their failure to enter in and possess the wondrous possession of God's abiding peace, which is available to His redeemed."
