Archaeologists have found traces of soap dating at least as far back as 2800 BC. In the ruins of ancient Babylon, they found descriptions of the process that was used for mixing fats and ashes together to form a cleansing agent. The chemical reaction would create a product that would remove dirt. Most of us today take soap for granted, just picking some up at the store without giving much thought to how it is made. But the process of making it by hand was a lengthy one and required days to cure.

In the 15th stanza of Psalm 119, the Psalmist is looking for a way to stay in clean in the midst of defilement. He expresses a desire to be removed from ideas, or individuals, who are not right, and not walking in the light.

(Philippians 2:15) "That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world."

The Psalmist does not want anything to be a part of his life which might hinder him spiritually, nor does he want to be a hinderance to someone else. He found that the only place to run and hide was in the strong shelter of the Word of God.
