Title: "How Sweet It Is" (13 of 22)
Text: Psalm 119:97-104
Author: Steve Wagers
Honey is the ONLY food made by an insect.
Honey bee only makes 1/12 teaspoon in its lifetime
An ounce of honey would fuel a bee around the world
A pound of honey takes 2 million flower visits
Bees fly 55K miles back/forth to bring the honey
Honey is considered to last forever/cannot spoil
Many anti-bacterial/septic benefits to the human body
In Medieval Europe honey was source of revenue for taxes
Ancient Greece saw it as source of blessings/happiness
Rameses III put 30K lbs into Nile River god for sacrifice
While 1 tablespoon of honey is rich with 17 grams of sugar, it doesn't have the harmful effects of sugar. It does elevate glucose/blood sugar level as much, it also contains Vitamin C, calcium, zinc, potassium, other minerals and antioxidants.
As the Psalmist thought upon the Word of God, he compared it to honey. Just as honey has sweet effects on the body, the Word of God has supernatural effects on the soul/spirit.
While the world offers an artificial sweetener, it is only a poor substitute for the real thing, and carries many harmful effects. If you've ever drank a drink filled with sugar, it will only make you more thirsty.
When you drink the water from the well of the Word of God, it will quench the thrusting of your soul for time/eternity.
Lamoyne Sharpe: "The Word is a well of wisdom whose water never wastes."
1) Sweetens our LEARNING! (DEVELOPMENT)
The Word of God is sweet because of its SUFFICIENCY. It is enough to carry us through life's journey.
A) The POSSESSION He GRASPED (97)
Law of God - not something he ENDURED - he ENJOYED
Word of God - not something he LAMENTED - he LOVED
This 13th stanza contains no petition/prayer. He's not asking God for anything. He realized he had EVERYTHING he needed in the Word of God.
