Series: A Closer Look at the Book: Psalm 119
Title: "The Message in a Bottle" (11 of 22)
Text: Psalm 119:81-88
Author: Steve Wagers
We come to the HALFway point of Psalm 119. It is the 11th stanza of the Psalter. We have followed David life journey. The one striking characteristic of the the book is that the Psalmist is always HONEST. We know how/what he is feeling. He doesn't hide it.
We have walked with him as he was Happy, Hurting, Humbled, Haunted, Hindered, Hidden, and Hungry.
One writer commented: "We would like to know who the Psalmist's identify, but the Holy Spirit intended for it to be an anonymous psalm so that the sufferings would not just belong to the Psalmist. Any beleaguered saint of God can put their name at the head of the psalm and sing it themselves."
1) A DESPERATE SOUL!
R. Earl Allen: "Desperation moves the needle of God's compass and pulls the strings of God's heart."
If that be the case, the Psalmist certainly has the attention of the Eternal One.
A) He LONGS to be RENEWED (81-82)
"SALVATION" - deliverance; rescue
In this case not Salvation from SIN - a SITUATION
Whatever he is going through, he longs for a DEEP work of God to deliver him and come to his rescue.
Technology - Education - Money - Fame - get what they do
God- get what HE CAN DO
HE IS ABLE TO DELIVER THEE
B) He LOOKS to be RESTORED (83)
A DEEP WORK - SALVATION
A DIVINE WORD - RESTORATION
Vessels of water were often carried in leather animal skins. When a bag was near fire, it would absorb the odor of the smoke. The bag would become tainted with the odor, and it would affect the taste of the water. The water had to be poured out, replenished, and carried in a new skin.
(Matthew (9:17) "Neither do men put new wine into old bottles; else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish, but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved."
"SMOKE" - polluting/pervertin ...
