Title: "The Upright Don't Need to be Uptight" (6 of 22)
Text: Psalm 119:41-48
Author: Steve Wagers
Man, who worried all the time, hired a professional worrier to do all of his worrying for him. It was very expensive, over $100K per year. His friend asked him how he was going to pay for it, and the man replied, "I don't know. That's his worry."
Stress, worry, doubt and fear are at an all time high, even among the people of God. The upright have become uptight about things, so many of which are beyond their control. This emotional turmoil has taken a physical toll, manifested in a variety of health concerns.
Phillips Brooks wrote, "What a vast portion of our lives is spent in anxious and useless forebodings concerning the future. Present joys, present blessings, slip by, and we miss half their sweet flavor, and all for want of faith in Him who provides for the tiniest insect in the sunbeam. Oh, when shall we learn the sweet trust in God our little children teach us every day by their confiding faith in us? We, who are so mutable, so faulty, so irritable, so unjust: and He who is so watchful, so pitiful, so loving, so forgiving! Why cannot we, slipping our hand into His each day, walk trustingly over that day's appointed path, knowing that evening will bring us sleep, peace, and home?"
In this stanza of the 119th Psalter, we are reminded how to have a peaceFUL soul in a peaceLESS society. The upright need not be uptight when they are:
1) RIGHTEOUS before God!
David was well aware of his constant need to get right, be right, and stay right before God.
A) MERCIFUL DELIVERANCE (41)
"salvation" - deliverance
The Psalmist did not know the fulness of salvation as we know it. The OT saints were saved/delivered into a right standing with God by faith, looking ahead to the Cross. We are saved/delivered into a right standing with God by faith, looking back to the Cross.
