Introduction:

Continue our series in Advent on Waiting and Resting on God. This morning we are going to read the birth narrative of John the Baptist. You might ask, but not Jesus? You may be surprised that the birth narrative of John the Baptist takes a prominent place in the birth narrative of Jesus. Mainly, because the birth of John is all about the birth of Jesus.

I'm going to do something a little different this morning. I will read through these passages and give a brief commentary along the way. And then when we get to the prophecy of Zechariah in Luke 1:67-80, we will dive in to see what that is all about.

Let's start in Luke 1:5-7

Zechariah, a priest, and Elizabeth, his wife are a godly couple who have
not been able to have children and now they are apparently too old for her to get pregnant.

Luke 1:8-10

Zechariah is chosen to go into the temple to burn incense. While he is in there, the people are outside in the court praying.

Luke 1:9-17

- an angel appears and scares the daylights out of Zech.

- angel says "Don't be afraid"

- Your prayer has been answered. Zech. and Eliz. prayers for a child of their own

- this child will be special, he will be great before the Lord, filled with the Holy Spirit

- he will turn people back to the Lord in the power of Elijah, to make people ready for the Lord

Luke 1:18-25

- Zech questions the angel, which ends up being a mistake

- The angel states his name as Gabriel and says, "I stand in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you this good news."

- Gabriel makes Zech unable to speak because of his unbelief

- Zech finally comes out of the temple and its obvious he has seen a vision or something

- Eliz. conceives!

Luke 1:57-66 The actual birth of John the Baptist

- friends and neighbors rejoice with Eliz.
