Series: Bold As A Lion

Text: Esther 4:1-17
If you have your Bible, I invite you to turn to the Book of Esther. Go to Psalm and take a left and you will find Job, and then you will find Esther.
We're in a series entitled "Bold as a Lion." Proverbs 28, verse 1, "The wicked flee when no one is pursuing, but the righteous are bold as a lion." Second Timothy 1, verse 7 says, "God has not given us a spirit of timidity or of fear, but of power and love and discipline." And today, we want to look at the boldness of a young Jewish woman, a very unlikely heroine, a very unlikely overcomer. She lived in the 400s B.C. Her family had gotten exiled under the conquest of Nebuchadnezzar. He came into Jerusalem in 605 B.C. and took captives back to Babylon. Daniel and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, we're familiar with those guys. He came in 597 B.C. and did the same thing, slapped Judah around a little bit, the nation of Judah with the capital city in Jerusalem, and he took back more captives. And then in 586 B.C. he wiped out the city, took back a host of captives, and Esther's family was taken. And she was taken in the Babylonian captivity, her family, and they stayed there. Now, in 539 B.C, Babylon was overcome and conquered by the Medo-Persian Empire led by Cyrus the Great. And he allowed the Jews to go back to their land. And many of them did go back, but not all of them went back. And Esther's family didn't go back. They stayed, now under the Medo-Persian Empire. And we find ourselves in the 400s B.C. Time has passed. Her mom and dad have died, and she's this young girl, an orphan girl, but she has a cousin named Mordecai. And Mordecai, an older cousin takes her in. He becomes a father to her. And she grows up under the love and the tutelage of Mordecai.
Well, if you know about the story, Xerxes is the king. He's also known in the Bible as Ahasuerus. He was born in 519 B.C. He ...
