Title: Getting Your Generosity On (2 of 2)
Series: Joyful Generosity
Author: Steve Jones
Text: 2 Corinthians 8 & 9
Sermon Summary: 1) What are three types of givers? 2) What kind of giver am I? 3) How can I grow in my generosity?
INTRODUCTION: In Arizona, in 2016, Wanda Dench (Pic) sent a text message meant for her grandson inviting him to Thanksgiving dinner. She THOUGHT she was texting her grandson, but she didn't realize he had changed his number and the texts were going to a total stranger named Jamal Hinton. Hinton texted, "You're not my grandma." Dench texted him a photo to "prove" she WAS his grandma, he sent her back a selfie of his own. If ever there was a case of mistaken identity, this was it (pic). Hinton then jokingly asked if he could stop by for dinner anyway. Dench then welcomed Hinton with open arms, and the two have been celebrating together ever since. Last Thursday makes eight years (pic). Aren't you glad you came to church today?
We are in a two-part sermon series entitled "Joyful Generosity." Last week, I began the message by asking all of us to consider the question, "Am I a JOYFUL giver?"
This week I want to focus on the second part of "Joyful Generosity" by asking ourselves the question, "Am I GENEROUS?" To answer that, we might need to define generosity. I did a word study on this and found that there are several words that are used in the Bible which are translated generous. They all pretty much mean...generous - liberal, bountiful. One author offered this summary definition which seems good to me: Generosity is the virtue of freely giving good things.
Notice it's not just giving things; it's giving GOOD things, both material and immaterial. When we hear the word "generosity," some of us will first think about giving money. Other people might be giving time, service, love, or forgiveness. These are all different and important ways we can express generosity, both materially and immaterially.
