Title: Getting Your Joy On (1 of 2)
Series: Joyful Generosity
Author: Steve Jones
Text: 1 Chronicles 29:9,17 & 2 Corinthians 8:1-2
Sermon Summary: 1) God WANTS us to have JOYFUL generosity. 2) God PROVIDES materially for joyful generosity. 3) God provides SPIRITUALLY for joyful generosity.
Introduction: Today we begin a sermon series entitled "Joyful Generosity." When you hear, "Joyful Generosity" you groan inwardly because you think I'm going to focus on the GENEROSITY part of "Joyful Generosity" but I'm not (not today). Today, I want to focus on the JOYFUL side of JOYFUL GENEROSITY. So, you came on the RIGHT day. This is a giving sermon you might enjoy.
Let's begin with a question (rhetorical): "Is our giving joyful?" Are we JOYFUL givers. Let's make it more personal, I want you to ask this question that I have been asking myself: "Am I a joyful giver?"
To be candid, full disclosure, I'm not sure I have ever asked myself that question. I am a giver. I daresay that many if not most of you are givers. I know that many of you are GENEROUS givers. But I am speaking now of the JOYFUL side of "Joyful Generosity."
So, when I looked deep inside of myself, and reflected upon the money that I give to God, through the church offering, I realized that I am NOT as joyful a giver as I should be. I'm not saying that I'm a SCROOGE. I'm not a scrooge. The emotions I attach to giving are not anger, misery, resentment, or sadness. What I discovered is that I am a dispassionate giver. I have little emotion attached to my giving at all.
Like some of you perhaps, my giving to the church is AUTOMATED. Most of my bills are automated - they are automatic deductions from our checking account or checks that are automatically written by my bank and sent out monthly to the various vendors. My monthly check to the church is like that.
Churches love it when their members automate their giving because our memories are terrible, but our BANK'S memo ...
