We are studying the book of Numbers on Sunday mornings. I know when you hear that you may immediately say, "Why? Who wants to study the book of Numbers!" *Do me a favor real quick. Just for the sake of my curiosity - who has ever heard a sermon series on the book of Numbers? Well, that's one reason we're studying this book. First, it's in the Bible so it's the Word of God. Second, it's not there by accident. And third, God wants to teach us something. So hopefully, we're learning together what God wants us to know from His Word.*
It's called "Numbers" because there are a few lists in this book and numbers listed to count the people of Israel. The Hebrew name for it was "In the wilderness..." and it comes from the first words of the first chapter. The Greek name was Arithmoi, which you can hear our word, arithmetic, there.
I'm calling this series, Life in Between. Because we find God's people, the Israelites, between their deliverance from slavery in Egypt and receiving God's provision in the Promised Land. How does this apply to us? What the wilderness was to the Israelites, the world is to the Christian today. Wandering in the wilderness is like living in the world. Even today, we live in between. We've been saved but we're not in Heaven yet. We're on a journey in a foreign land.
