Introduction
Teresa and I were married in the springtime but had gotten engaged in the autumn. She was living in Virginia Beach; me in North Carolina. And so, while our engagement was fun and exciting, it was also hard. It was hard being apart and waiting for spring to come. We just so desperately wanted it to be over so that we could be together. Not to mention the added stress of planning a wedding and having to deal with everybody's opinions and wants on the matter, we were really close to scrapping the whole thing and just eloping in December.
You see, we were just really struggling with the idea of waiting six more months. We had already made the commitment to be together. We were already starting to plan our lives out together. I mean we had even already gotten a joint cell phone plan together. But we had not yet had a wedding. We had not yet started that life together. We had not yet entered into the covenant in full. Waiting in the already but not yet is tough! We were able to wait, though, partially because dealing with our families had we eloped wasn't worth it! But, man, were we just counting down the days, looking ahead to our wedding and making ourselves ready for it.
The Bible describes the church today as living in an already but not yet reality. With the first coming of Jesus and with his death and resurrection the Kingdom of God has been established. But we wait his return, his second coming, when he will consummate the Kingdom and we will enjoy the fullness of His presence and the new earth. And so, we look ahead and seek to make ourselves ready for that day.
This morning we're beginning at Chesapeake the season of Advent, which will last us the four weeks leading up to our Christmas services on December 24. But advent is different than just celebrating Christmas or doing a Christm ...
