Nicole Whitacre, in an online article, shared that her 10-year-old daughter came to her one day and said, "Mom, I'm caught in an emotional rip current." Since the two of them had spoken often about how emotions can feel like rip currents, it was her way of saying she needed help handling her feelings.
What an unusual but accurate way to speak about our emotions. Emotional rip currents. Rip currents or riptides are those forces lurking beneath the surface of the ocean with the strength to pull us under the water, drown us and drag us out to sea.
We can all sympathize with that little girl!
Have you ever found yourself caught in an emotional riptide? Have you ever felt overwhelmed by emotions? Felt as if you were no longer in control of your emotions but that they were now in control of you?
Martin Lloyd Jones, in "Spiritual Depression" wrote, "One of the greatest problems in life, in this world, for all people, is the right handling of our feelings and emotions. Oh, the havoc that is wrought and the tragedy, misery and wretchedness that are to be found in the world simply because people do not know how to handle their own feelings!"
Being an observer of humanity as well as a participant in humanity, I would have to agree with his assessment.
As we have said before, hurting people hurt people. Emotionally distressed people distress people.
