Please turn to 2 Timothy 4 as we continue in this series titled "Rediscover Church." We come to this series examining who we are and what we're all about. As we rediscover church, we are called to evaluate whether or not we are the church God wants us to be. Are we doing His things with the right attitude and the right purpose in mind? Far too often we do things and forget the reason we're doing them, or how we are to go about doing them in a way that honors and glorifies God.

Last week we talked about the importance of gathering together because we can't do this thing called the Christian life on our own. Today we come to the subject of preaching. Yes, we're going to preach a sermon about preaching. It's going to be an odd sermon because in essence I'm going to talk about what I'm talking about. I'm going to give you some clear mandates from the Bible as to what you should be looking for when a person like me takes this responsibility, whether in this church or any other church you're a part of. In doing so, we need to ask, when it comes to preaching, are we booming or are we busting? That is, is this a boom or bust dichotomy? Far too often we come in with all kinds of ideas and thoughts that we're doing well, but in essence we're not.

I came to a conclusion this week with the Chicago Bears. Early in the off season, Bears fans came to the realization that we are going to have a good year. The men from the north no longer have their star quarterback, so things are going to be better. Things are going to be different. Even the national media say the Bears are going to be contenders. Now, three games into the season, we have not seen a boom; we've seen a bust.

When I was on Twitter this last week, I saw a picture that showed how bad of a bust the Bears are. It talked about the last time Twitter was under someone other than Elon Mus ...
