Today in our "Prayer series" I want to talk about three things that "go with" prayer. These three things can "turbo-charge" our prayers.
I. PRAYER AND FASTING
Matthew 6:16 "When you fast"
This is the verse immediately following Jesus teaching his disciples how to pray the Lord's prayer. Perhaps that's because fasting and prayer nearly always go together in the Bible. In at least eight Biblical passages that connection is explicit - Ezra 8:2, Joel 1:14, Luke 5:33, Psalm 35:13, Daniel 9:3, Luke 2:37, Luke 5:33, Acts 14:23. In the rest it is implicit. Prayer is not always accompanied by fasting, but fasting is nearly always accompanied by prayer. Notice that Jesus assumed his followers would fast.
No practice of Jesus is more alien or neglected in the modern Western church than fasting. The idea of drawing on the Spirit's power not through our minds but through our stomachs sounds absurd. Few followers of Jesus regularly fast anymore.
And yet, until recent history, fasting was one of the core practices of the Way of Jesus. Jesus fasted. The early church fasted (Acts 13:2), ...
