INTRODUCTION: Last week we saw the glorified Christ walking in the midst of 7 golden
lampstands. He told us they were the 7 churches. We also said that the lampstands should remind us of the lampstand in the Temple. So we see the people of God enjoying the presence, power and fellowship with God and Jesus walking in their Midst.
Now keep in mind from about chapter 4 onward we are going to see the unmitigated wrath of God poured out on the earth in an attempt to judge it and purge it prior to re-creating it.
We know there is therefore no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. So somehow the people of God are protected from His wrath, we see that all through the scriptures.
- Noah and his family were preserved through the flood.
- Lot and his family were taken out of Sodom prior to Judgement.
- The Jews were protected from God's wrath on Egypt.
And we will see in the text that there is no mention of the church after chapter 3, until we see them gathered with Jesus in Heaven. So because of this and allowing other passages to illumine our understanding we can know that the Church is protected and preserved.
JESUS JUDGES THE CHURCH FIRST - But something else we see throughout scripture is that before God judges the world, the unbelievers He judges His own people
1 Peter 4:17-18 (ESV)
17 For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 And "If the righteous is scarcely saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?"
