Title: I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (1)
Series: Ecclesiastes
Author: Collin Wimberly
Text: Ecclesiastes 1:12-2:26
CIT - Solomon explores the pleasures of life trying to find meaning and purpose.
Proposition - True purpose and fulfillment in life can only be found in Jesus Christ.
INTRODUCTION:
Read the text - vs. 12-14
Music begins at vs. 13 - Video - I still haven't found what I'm looking for.
End Video -
The preacher in vs. 12 would have agreed with Bono and U2. He is on as quest - a search - to understand life. To find meaning and purpose in who he is and what he does. And he's not found it.
He's searching, but can't come up with an answer.
His name is Solomon. The Bible refers to him as the wisest man who ever lived.
A lot of us can relate. A lot of you can. Even now - in your youth - you are searching for something that makes sense out of life. Let's follow along with Solomon on this quest of meaning. It doesn't start well for Solomon - He is disillusioned. Vs. 13 - This is an unhappy business.
I) His quest began with acquiring knowledge - vs. 12-18
Vs. 14 - Under the Sun - From an earthly perspective.
Vs. 16 - I acquired great knowledge. Solomon is most likely an old man at this time. This book is his memoir. I think he is writing this for his son - Rehoboam who will rule after him.
He had great knowledge - 1 Kings 4:32-34 (ESV)
32 He also spoke 3,000 proverbs, and his songs were 1,005. 33 He spoke of trees, from the cedar that is in Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of the wall. He spoke also of beasts, and of birds, and of reptiles, and of fish. 34 And people of all nations came to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and from all the kings of the earth, who had heard of his wisdom.
Knowledge is good. Education is important. However, It is a dead end in and of itself.
Vs. 18 - the more I know the more sorrow and frustration I find.
I have studied life and found it vanity - Meani ...
