Actress Lily Tomlin once said, "I've always wanted to be somebody, now I see I should have been more specific." That little humorous quip sums up and expresses the desire and frustration of the human heart. We all yearn to be somebody...just not the somebody we currently are.
- We long for significance.
- We long for acceptance.
We instinctively know we were made for more, to be more than what we are.
There is a nagging voice inside each of us that says, "things are not as they should be." There is something inside of us that says, "I am not as I should be." That recurring thought is the starting point for a lifelong quest to discover who I am, why am I here, what is wrong and can it be fixed.
As we said last week, if we are to live life as it was meant to be lived, we must, as the old Greek philosophers said, "know Thyself." It is important to "know thyself" because "what a person believes about himself, how she identifies herself, determines where he looks for meaning and acceptance and what she is willing to do in order to gain it."
We need to "settle once for all who we are most deeply and where life is to be found" (Needham). That requires us to understand humanity as it was, as it is, and as it was meant to be.
Truthfully, we cannot know who we are, why we are here and what we are meant to be apart from God and His Word. We cannot truly know ourselves apart from God. We cannot find our worth, our meaning, or our purpose apart from God.
We are created and dependent beings made in the image and likeness of God. Because we are created beings...
- We are not free to create our own identity.
- We are not free to construct our own purpose.
- We are not free to completely write our own story.
But that is exactly what sinful fallen humanity seeks to do, to understand themselves apart from God, to create ...
