Text: Deuteronomy 32:1-14
Turn to Deuteronomy 32. We are taking a break from our study, to talk about our world. Our world has a habit of turning on its head. (TITLE)
Everyone on the globe knows about Oct 7 and the vicious, brutal, barbaric, attacks on Israel by the Hamas. This reminds us that our world is filled with unspeakable evil. (I remind you that Israel is the chosen of God and the Bible says that the one who is against Israel is against God. We need to support Israel.) The Israelis and Americans who were killed has impacted the civilized world with a broken heart. The entire globe weeps and prays for a quick conclusion. It's a picture of an Upside-down world.
On the same morning (Oct 7), in Memphis, TN, a 53-year-old Minister at Bellview Baptist, was running in a triathlon. While running, he went into cardiac arrest, leaving this earth and entered the presence of Jesus. He was known as an athlete, also for his kindness, as well as the many lives he had touched. His name was Tim Shelton. For his family and this church, the world is turned upside down. Death flips your world.
A trip to the funeral home or the cemetery has a way of making life feel upside down.
In Deuteronomy 32, Moses is attempting to prepare the Hebrews for his departure as he has handed off the leadership to Joshua. At his advanced age, everyone (including him) knew His death was imminent. He was 120 (or so) years old and had led them for 40 years (or so). In fact, there were few, if any, Senior Adults left because, at this time, all the previous generation had died. Moses was the only pastor/leader this generation had known. The Bible doesn't say it, but perhaps they named him 'pastor or leader emeritus' (whatever that means).
What Moses did for Joshua and the people is give them a message that would help them when he was gone. It began, in chapter 31, with a warning about what they would be temp ...
