Introduction

I am fortunate to have a good doctor who has been taking good care of me over the past ten years. My doctor has given me great advice on how to stay healthier in life. Over the past few years, she has told me yes and warned me several times that I must watch my weight, exercise more, and practice healthy eating habits.

Have I heard what she says? Yes. Did I believe what she was telling me was true? Yes. Have I put into practice what she says? Let's say I am a work in progress. Today, I have switched to a healthier lifestyle, but had I listened and obeyed her advice three years ago, I would have been physically in a much better place.

James was the half-brother of Jesus and was writing to religious people. They likely grew up in the Jewish faith and know God's laws. He leads them to begin taking the steps in their faith in practical ways. For example, James teaches us to be careful with our communication, triumph over temptation, treat one another the way God calls us to, handle life's trials with heavenly wisdom, and pray effectively and get results.

To be blessed by the Bible, believers will exhibit these three marks.

1. Receive the word.

Did you ever have a class in college where you went to the class but mainly caught up on sleep? We don't want to fall asleep to what the word says. We want to be active listeners because the Word promises to be engaged in our lives. In contrast to your college class, James tells us how to receive the word by giving us three keys:

A. Key #1: We will be quick to listen. This means you realize that you need to hear from God and are eager to hear from Him. What are you keen to hear? Your team won, the test results are promising, or getting a good review on the job. Or are you anticipating what God will say to you in His Word?

B. Key #2. We will be slow to speak. This means we recognize the value of being spoke ...
