25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;

26 and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. NIV

Introduction:

Jesus came to the house of Lazarus after he had died and he met Martha to talk with her about her brother. She was so anxious that she came out to meet him outside the village. She was angry with him because he had not been there earlier.
He came to comfort her.

He made a very bold statement when he said

"I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.

This was a bold statement to any one but especially to one who was suffering the loss from a death.

1. The Credentials "I AM"

Jesus was using a familiar term for God in these words.

Ex 3:13-14

13 Moses said to God, "Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, `The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, `What is his name?' Then what shall I tell them?"

14 God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. NIV

The "I am" is the one that Brought the 10 plagues on Egypt to deliver Israel.

The I am is the one that parted the red sea!

The I am is the one that brought Mana daily to them for food.

The I am is the one that brought water from a rock.

The I am is the one that brought down the walls of Jericho.

The I am is the one that brought fire down from Heaven in the days of Elijah

The I am is the one that delivered Daniel from a Lions den.

The I am is the one that is making this promise!

There is power in that Name!

Martha recognized it

John 11:21-22

21 "Lord," Martha said to Jesus, "if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask." NIV

Roman guards came to recognize it in the garden
