Title: The Good Long Life
Author: Marion Clark
Text: Proverbs 16:31-17:6
Introduction
If the book of Proverbs had included advertisements, one would go something like this.
Are streaks of gray starting to appear in your hair? Try Solomon's Formula, guaranteed to multiply those hairs until your head displays a crown of glory.
Our passage this morning will help you develop a head of shining gray!
Text
Context and Theme
31 Gray hair is a crown of glory;
it is gained in a righteous life.
6 Grandchildren are the crown of the aged,
and the glory of children is their fathers.
These bookend proverbs provide the context and theme of the passage. Far from being a sign of a worn-out life, gray hair is the distinguishing crown of the one who has lived long and well. The secret for such a life lies not in diet nor in exercise. The secret lies in living a righteous life.
Proverbs has much to say on what a righteous life entails. Regarding speech of the righteous, there is nothing twisted or crooked. Indeed, their mouth is a fountain of life. They ponder what they will say, and so they guide their neighbor with knowledge and wisdom.
The righteous are just in their dealings. They delight in justice. They know the rights of the poor and they willingly and boldly defend the rights of the poor and needy. As for themselves, they walk the straight path. They hate falsehood. Though they may be rich, they do not trust in riches; rather, they trust in the Lord to whom they offer up their prayers.
The righteous are merciful and generous. They are generous givers. They are known by their bold and joyful spirit.
What is their reward besides a crown of gray hair? Grandchildren. What they get is the legacy that they leave. They leave to their children and to the grandchildren the legacy of a righteous life for themselves to live. And so, the children glory in their parents.
