INTRODUCTION: Year's ago, I was at the Founder's Inn, Richmond, Virginia, for a minister's conference hosted by Regent University. I came upon a banquet table with shrimp cocktail, Kiwi fruit, and assorted appetizers. I thought, "This is nice, they're really treating us minister-types well!" I filled a plate and sat down to eat. It wasn't long before a hotel staff-person approached to inform me that I was crashing a wedding rehearsal banquet. I was perp-walked out of the dining room. It was a little embarrassing, even by MY standards. I learned a lesson in humility that day. Jesus taught a lesson at another banquet.
One Sabbath, Jesus, along with a distinguished list of guests, had been invited to dinner at the home of a prominent leader (Luke 14:1). As the guests were finding their places, Jesus watched them jockey for the best seats. Suddenly, He offered some unsolicited advice: "Sit down in the lowest place...For whoever exalts himself will be humbled and the one who humbles himself will be exalted" (Luke 14:10-11).
Everywhere, power players flinched. But Jesus wasn't finished. He turned to the host and proceeded to instruct him on a better way to entertain guests: "When you give a dinner or a supper, do not ask your friends, your brothers, your relatives, or your rich neighbors, because they might invite you back, and you would be repaid" (Luke 14:12).
What an awkward moment! Jesus seemed to be saying to his host, "Next time, don't invite all these people you invited tonight." Was he questioning the man's taste in friends or his grasp of social etiquette? Look closely at what Jesus said next.
