INTRODUCTION

HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE PICTURES WITH YOU THIS
MORNING?

PICTURES REPRESENT SOMEONE OR SOMETHING YOU CARE
ABOUT.

THEY ARE NOT THE REAL THING.

THEY ONLY REPRESENT THE REAL THING.

THAT DOESN'T MEAN THEY ARE NOT IMPORTANT.

WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL OUR HOUSE BURNED. ONE
OF THE TRAGEDIES OF THAT FIRE WERE THE PICTURES
THAT WERE DESTROYED. CUTE, CUDDLY PICTURES OF
YOURS TRULY! THOSE COULD NEVER BE REPLACED.

THE BIBLE GIVES TO US MANY PICTURES.

THESE PICTURES ARE MEANT TO POINT PEOPLE TO THE
REALITY OF CHRIST.

THE PROBLEM IS WHEN PEOPLE HOLD ON TO THE PICTURE
RATHER THAN GRASPING THE REAL THING.

COLOSSIANS POINTS OUT SOME OF THESE PICTURES.

IN COLOSSIANS 2: 11-17 SEVERAL OT PICTURES ARE
DISCUSSED.

THE WRITER CALLS THEM SHADOWS.

THE MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE.

COLOSSIANS 1 POINTS OUT THE SUFFICIENCY OF CHRIST.

COLOSSIANS 2 POINTS OUT THE DEFICIENCY OF SELF
EFFORT.

THERE ARE FOUR MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE WHEN
CONSIDERING GOD.

INTELLECTUALISM: YOU CAN THINK YOUR WAY TO GOD.

MYSTICISM: YOU CAN FEEL YOUR WAY TO GOD.

LEGALISM: YOU CAN ACT YOUR WAY TO GOD.

RITUALISM: YOU CAN OBSERVE YOUR WAY TO GOD.

THESE ARE NOT ONLY MISTAKES PEOPLE MADE IN BIBLE
TIMES. THEY ARE MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE TODAY.

THE MISUNDERSTANDING PEOPLE MANIFEST.

THERE ARE MILLIONS WHO BELIEVE THERE ARE CERTAIN
FORMS AND CEREMONIES THAT WILL MAKE YOU ACCEPTABLE
TO GOD.

THE BELIEF IS RITUAL WILL MAKE YOU RIGHTEOUS.

THIS WAS THE BELIEF IN THE DAY OF THE EARLY
CHRISTIANS, AND IT IS THE BELIEF OF MANY TODAY.

IN AND OF ITSELF THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH
RITUAL.

THERE ARE GOOD RITUALS.

MANY RITUALS ARE WONDERFUL PICTURES OF REALITY.

THE CONFUSION COMES IN WHEN FOLKS THINK THEY ARE
GOING TO HEAVEN BECAUSE OF SOMETHING THEY DO IN
CHURCH.
