Introduction: This past summer, some good friends invited our family and others to spend a day at their lake home. It was a beautiful, sunny summer day filled with laughing, grilling out, and relaxing on the lake. This lovely day worsened when my daughter and I got on the family jet ski and decided to take a little tour around the lake. We got lost on the lake, and no matter how hard we tried, we could not find our way back to our friend's lake home. I will save you the details, but three hours later, we did find our way home thanks to some wonderful folks who lived near the lake. Once we reconnected with our family and friends, our fears turned to joy and peace.
When was the last time you or someone you loved got lost? I can assure you that it is not a fun reality. The reality is that we are spiritually lost without a saving relationship with Jesus Christ.
1. Jesus Died for Us (Romans 5:6-8)
Before we understand the good news of Jesus Christ, we must understand the bad news. The bad news is that we are sinners, separated from a holy God due to our sins. There is no amount of good work we can do that will make us acceptable before the Lord. If we could be or do enough good to earn our acceptance before God, there would be no reason for Christ to die for us on the cross.
The Bible makes it clear that before Christ, we were "without strength," "ungodly," and "sinners." In our culture, we like to think we are sufficient on our own to make things work out. We think we are strong enough to stand on our own two feet. We think we are wise enough to find a solution to every problem.
Growing up, I thought of myself as a pretty good kid. In my mind, I wasn't that bad because I didn't murder anyone. That was my standard. If I didn't murder anyone, I would be a decent human. I didn't know I was a sinner in need of a Savior.
