Introduction

A. Is a christian defined by what he is or what he does?

1. Someone may say, ''that's like asking which came first, the chicken or the egg.''

2. Actually that's easy: the chicken, because the bible says god created all living beings. Then he gave to them the ability to reproduce after their own kind.

B. In the same way a christian is defined, first by what he is. That leads to what he does.

1. Many have tried to pit the writer paul against james on this subject.

2. Those who want to look at the bible critically rather than completely would say one teaches salvation by faith; the other teaches salvation by actions.

a. Paul: ''by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves. It is the gift of god. Not of works lest anyone should boast.''

B. James: ''faith without works is dead.''

3. Who is right? Both are.

C. ''A christian is something before he does something.'' d. Martin lloyd- jones.

1. ''Righteousness on the inside will produce the fruit of right action.''

2. The bible teaches action that springs from character.

D. The 4th beatitude speaks of action that springs from a new character in christ.

1. The action is a merciful spirit.

2. Mercy is an important quality in a world like ours today.

I. What does it mean to be merciful?

A. People often see this quality from a wrong perspective.

1. They believe if i am merciful, then people will be merciful to me. If i am good to everyone; then everyone will be good to me.

2. This is not the way the world works.

3. The greatest example of this is the lord jesus.

A. Jesus was the most merciful person who ever lived.

B. Look at all he did.
