Introduction

A. We live in an uptight world.

1. Stress related problems have become epidemic in our culture.

2. Health, relationships, personal safety, etc. Are all affected by the uptight state most are in today.

B. We are discovering, through the sermon on the mount, happiness is an inside job.

1. Uptight people are not happy people.

2. Neither are the people who have to live with them.

C. We need to discover ways to reduce the tension in our lives.

1. I read the other day about a ''stress diet'' you could go on to help reduce tension.

a. Breakfast: ½ grapefruit; 1 slice whole wheat toast; 8 oz. Skim milk.

B. Lunch: 4 oz lean broiled chicken breast; 1 cup steamed spinach; 1 cup herb tea; 1 oreo cookie.

C. Mid-afternoon snack: the rest of the oreos in the package; 2 pints rocky road ice cream; nuts; cherries and whipped cream; 1 jar hot fudge sauce.

D. Dinner: 2 loaves garlic bread; 4 cans or large pitcher coke; 1 large sausage; mushroom and cheese pizza; 3 snickers bars.

E. Late evening snack: entire frozen sara lee cheesecake (eaten directly from the freezer.

2. We probably need a better way than that to relieve tension.

D. There are lots of stress relieving techniques available today.

1. Some are good.

2. Some are not so good.

E. I want to share with you a couple principles today from the beatitudes that can have long term and very beneficial results in reducing tension in your life.

1. These are found in matthew 5: 5-6.

2. The two beatitudes deal with the humble and the hungry. (sounds like a television serial doesn't it?)

I. The humble. ''Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth.''
