Introduction
A. How many truly happy people do you know?
1. The list probably isn't very long.
2. People are situationally happy, but it seems that even the situations are diminishing.
B. Even in christian circles you don't often see a lot of genuine happiness.
1. John macarthur ''there is now an atmosphere of 'easy believism' that allows people to experience an initial happiness in encountering the gospel, but not a deep, long- term joy derived from serious obedience to christ's commands.''
2. The people that the bible teaches has the greatest potential for happiness are, i am afraid, not living up to this potential.
c. Jesus is in the happiness business.
1. The first sermon ever recorded as having been preached by jesus begins with the theme of happiness.
A. Matthew 5-7 records the sermon on the mount.
B. This is the greatest sermon ever preached.
C. In it is god's prescription for happiness.
2. How does one find true happiness?
A. By following jesus' prescription.
B. It's like going to a doctor. The doctor writes a prescription. To get better you must follow the prescription.
1) god is the doctor
2) the bible is the prescription.
3) the holy spirit is the pharmacist.
d. Today, we will begin a series of messages on happiness as described in the sermon on the mount.
E. The first message will deal with the point, purpose, and practical application of this sermon.
1. Then we will deal, for a few weeks, with the beatitudes, or attitudes that ought to be.
2. Then we will get into the ''how to'' part of living out happiness according to god's plan.
3. Every area imaginable will be covered.
