Introduction

A. I wonder how many of you have had any kind of trouble this week.

1. Trouble can be on a scale of mild inconvenience to major catastrophe.

2. Wherever you may fall on the continuum i am sure most here faced some kind of trouble this week.

B. Believe it or not it is trouble that makes us strong.

1. In fact we are made stronger during times of trouble than we are in times of ease.

2. Those who exercise understand this on the physical level.

A. If there is no resistance there is no strengthening of the muscles.

b. If would be great if one could just watch a good work out video and get strong, but it just doesn't work that way.

3. The same is true in the area of personal growth.

C. We are in a study of 2 corinthians as we prepare for a new millennium.

1. In 2 corinthians 1:8-11 the writer, paul, takes a page out of his own life to illustrate the presence and purpose of trouble.

2. Today's lesson teaches us we cannot depend on ourselves, but must depend totally and completely on god.

I. The reality of trouble. Vs. 8-9a.

A. Trouble is inevitable.

1. Trouble is like an unwanted guest is what paul says in vs. 8. ''We do not want you to be ignorant of our trouble which cam e to us in asia.''

2. It can be minor trouble resulting in inconvenience.

a. The flat tire or traffic jam on the way to work.

B. The tele-marketer that calls at dinner.

C. The slow line at the check out counter.

3. It can be a major unexpected, life jarring situation.

4. The truth is trouble comes to all.

A. Jesus said it well. ''In this world you will have tribulation...''

B. ''God only had one son without sin, but none without trouble and sorrow.''
