Introduction

A. Starlight crusade is only three weeks away.

B. What is starlight all about?

1. The sole purpose of starlight is to introduce people to your best friend jesus.

2. Everything we do is geared to that end.

C. For the next 4 sundays i am going to focus on people who met jesus.

1. Those folks were never the same again.

2. The same thing that happened in their lives can happen in the lives of people we know.

D. Jesus met all kinds of people.

E. One of the most interesting is a guy the bible calls zacchaeus.

1. His story can be found in luke 19: 1-10

2. It is the classic illustration of the salvation process.

3. The place where they met is significant. ''Zacchaeus was up a tree.''

F. The story begins with jesus passing through jericho. Vs. 1.

1. Jericho was an interesting city. It was a resort area.

2. Mark anthony had given it, at one time, to cleopatra.

3. Jesus was passing through on his way to jerusalem.

4. This was the last time he would be in jericho before the cross.

G. On the way he meets a man named zacchaeus.

I. The individual vs. 2.

A. His parents delight.

1. His parents had given him a name with meaning.

2. Zacchaeus means peace, innocent, righteous.

3. Do you read hope and desire in that name?

B. His personal choice.

1. Zacchaeus did not live up to those hopes.

2. He became a publican, or a tax collector.

3. His role was different than that of tax collectors today. He was given a quota. Anything above that quota for his region he could keep.

4. Zacchaeus made some personal choices that, later, he would not be proud he had made.

C. He was personally disliked.

1. He was not a loved man.

2. Jesus loved him.

3. You often find jesus dealing with people like zacchaeus.
