Introduction

A. What are the most wonderful words we can hear?

1. I love you.

2. Thank you.

3. I forgive you.

B. I forgive you are wonderful sounding words, but they are rare today.

C. Yet, we have a god who says to us from a manger, ''i forgive you.''

1. Matthew 1: 18-21

2. Acts 13: 38,39

D. Understanding and accepting god's forgiveness frees us to:

1. Be released from guilt.

2. Forgive ourselves.

3. Forgive others.

i. God's forgiveness.

A. There is a condition that demands forgiveness.

1. What was the purpose of the birth of jesus?

2. God's law has been broken.

A. Sin is breaking god's guidelines for living.

B. God established parameters for our benefit.

C. We violate those parameters and the outcome is dangerous, defeating, and destructive.

3. Sin alienates us from god.

4. Sin imprisons us in guilt.

A. David lost his joy.

B. Samson lost his power.

C. We replay our sin constantly.

D. We assume nothing can be done about it.

b. The compassion that precipitates forgiveness.

1. The choice is god's to forgive.

2. No one forced god to send jesus into the world.

C. It is the cross that provides forgiveness.

1. God has dealt with our sin.

2. It is not god's desire to bring retribution for sin, but to return the sinner to himself.

3. Forgiveness comes through the blood of christ.

4. I john 1:7 says, ''the blood of jesus cleanses us from all sin.''

D. The choice that perfects our forgiveness.

1. Forgiveness was secured when christ died on the cross.

2. What sin did jesus pay for? All sin past, present, and future.
