Introduction

Called to an uncomfortable thing

Just as Jesus taught and modelled in his ministry, the Gospel of salvation is for all who believe. His Church, therefore, transcends all earthly barriers bringing true peace and reconciliation to humanity.

1. Following in Jesus' steps 9:32-43

But first we begin with some smaller stories, which upon first read seem kind of random and just stuck in. You see, the story of Saul on the Damascus Road and then this story of Peter and Cornelius, the Roman centurion, are among the biggest and most important events recorded in the book of Acts. And so, you wouldn't be fault if you were to just kind of skim over these eleven verses in between. But Luke is doing two things in these short stories, setting us up for what's coming in chapter 10.

First, Luke is intentionally drawing parallels between Peter's ministry and Jesus'. The healing of Aeneas and the raising of Dorcas from the dead echo Jesus' healing of the paralytic in Luke 5:18-26 and then the raising of Jairus' daughter in Luke 8:40-56. Again, this just is a continuation of a theme that has been woven throughout this whole book that Jesus continues to be present with and at work through the church. And so, whether it's in suffering and persecution or in healing and the salvation of people the mission of the church is the mission of Jesus.

But second, we're also seeing Peter moving out from Jerusalem and already crossing barriers in his ministry.
