Title: The End Is Here (2)
Series: Unstoppable
Author: Patrick Edwards
Text: Acts 2:1-47
Introduction
One of my all-time favorite shows is The Office. A moderate hit for NBC in the mid-aughts, the show picked up significant popularity thanks to the advent of streaming and Netflix. In fact, the show is more popular today, a decade since the series finale, than it ever was when it aired live. Finales for popular shows can be tough to pull off. Some are just bad, for example see Lost, some are highly debated, see Seinfeld or The Sopranos, but I think the overwhelming consensus was love for The Office finale.
One such memorable moment from the last episode came when character Andy Bernard is looking back on his time with former co-workers and remarks, "I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them." It's touching and I think resonates with the feelings of nostalgia we all experience when we look back at times in our lives. 'Oh, if I had just enjoyed those times more.' Andy, like most of us, speculates that had we had some sort of signal or revelation we could've lived those days to the fullest. Knowing the times you are living in is vital for day-to-day life.
You might remember Paul said something similar in Ephesians 5, "Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk-not as unwise people but as wise- making the most of the time," EPHESIANS 5:15-16, and this morning's passage tells us exactly what times we are living in. Acts 2 tells us we are in the last days, that the end is here. Maybe you pictured the end of days differently? Personally, we all picture the end of our own days as dying a peaceful death after a long, long life. Globally, maybe we picture some sort of catastrophic event like we've seen in Hollywood movies. But just looking around the room this morning, I'm not sure many of us would've characterized this as the last days.
Of course, we realize that "last days" ...
