There were many key leaders during World War II, but two of the most significant were Prime Minster of England Winston Churchill and President of the United States Franklin Roosevelt.

Winston Churchill became Prime Minister shortly after Germany took control of Europe in 1940. He kept the United Kingdom together during those dark early days of the war with his famous speeches which became a great inspiration to the British people.

His first speech as Prime Minister was given on May 13, 1940 was called: Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat. He said, "You ask what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road my be; for without victory there is no survival."

President Roosevelt inspired our nation after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 with his own words of inspiration. He said, "We have nothing to fear but fear itself."

These two great politicians teamed up together to defeat the Axis Powers of Germany, Italy and Japan. Together they worked to defeat tyranny and bring freedom to the world once again. Without their leadership who knows if the Axis Powers would have been defeated of reigned for a 1,000 years as Hitler desired.

Did you know that both Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt almost lost their lives before the war began? In December 1931, Churchill was struck by a car as he crossed Fifth Avenue in New York City. Then in Miami in December 1933, an assassin's bullet barely missed Roosevelt and killed the man standing next to him.

Both leaders could have died, but they survived. Why? Because God wanted these two men to work together to lead their nations and the world to victory over evil as part of his plan to give the Jews back their promised land after the war was over.
