I. Introduction
A. ''When as a child i laughed and wept, time crept; when as a youth i dreamt and talked, time walked; when i became a full-grown man, time ran; when older still i daily grew, time flew; soon shall i find in traveling on, time gone...'' from stephen olford lectures.
B. One of life's most solemn realizations that can come to a christian is that he can miss god's day of opportunity.
C. No one has ever been great or useful, in the highest sense, who has not regarded time as opportunities seized or opportunities missed.
D. Jesus said it most clearly in john 9.
1. John 9:4 in the greek says, ''we must work the works of him who sent me...''
2. The lord jesus was identifying himself with his disciples, including you and me, thus bringing dignity, liberty, and urgency into christian service.
e. The lord teaches us in this passage.
Ii. The divine mandate for service.
A. Responsibility to god.
1. ''Christians will never come to regard the work of god with any sense of importance and imperativeness until they learn it is divine service.''
2. ''The person who says that he has no sense of obligation to serve god is a person who has never received the divine nature.''
3. Service for jesus was important and imperative.
A. As a son.
(1) ''i must be about my father's business.'' luke 2:49.
(2) we need the same sense of urgency as children of god that jesus had for divine service.
b. As savior.
(1) ''the son of man must be lifted up, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.'' john 3:15-16.
(2) there was no holding back at any point for jesus.
(3) the cross should be worked out practically in our lives on a daily basis.
(4) the question is are we holding anything back?
C. As a servant.
(1) jesus made himself of no reputation.
(2) we need the attitude of a john knox who said, ''give ...
