I. Introduction

A. A recent poll by u.s. News and world report, revealed some of america's biggest fears.

1. 40% said crime, violence, and drugs.

2. 15% noted the economy and unemployment.

3. 7% cited moral and religious concerns.

4. 5% think it's education.

5. 3% believe health care.

B. The magazine summarized by saying, ''fear is never far away.''

C. Unfortunately that's true.

1. One of the biggest problems with which people deal today is fear.

2. One mom tells of discussing the 23rd psalms with her daughter. It was dark out. After the discussion the mom and daughter walked into the darkened kitchen. The little girl said, ''mommy, even though i walk through the valley of the shadow of death, i will fear no evil. But can you turn the light on, please?''

D. The dictionary lists over 700 phobias.

1. Aerophobia: fear of heights.

2. Agoraphobia: fear of open places.

3. Anthophobia: fear of flowers.

4. Anthrophobia: fear of people.

5. Autophobia: fear of being alone.

6. Ballistophobia: fear of bullets.

7. Ergophobia: fear of work.

8. Claustrophobia: fear of close places.

9. Ombrophobia: fear of rain.

10. Optophobia: fear of opening one's eyes.

11. Phobophobia: fear of fear.

E. People are being strangled by a terrifying serpent: a boa-constrictor called fear.

f. Jesus said, ''in the last days men's hearts would be failing them because of fear.''

G. Jesus puts fear into perspective for us.

1. He tells us what to fear.

2. He tells us what not to fear.

H. Look at luke 12:4-7.

Ii. All fear is not unhealthy.

A. Jesus told us to fear.

1. The unsaved have a legitimate reason to fear.

2. We have taken the fear of a christless eternity out of our vocabulary, but god has not.

B. It is healthy for all to fear god.

1. The bible talks about the fear of the lord.
