If you have your Bible, turn to Exodus chapter 20, the passage on the Ten Commandments. We started a series some weeks ago entitled "Written in Stone," and we're going through the Ten Commandments one by one. And today, we're on commandment number nine, "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor."

Now, I'm going to tell you a few names, and you think about what these people have in common. Benedict Arnold. Richard Nixon. Lance Armstrong. Jesse Smollett. Bill Clinton. Potiphar's wife. Ananias and Sapphira. They are all well-known liars. That's how we know these people, because they lied, and they lied on a grand scale.

There was a study done by Robert Feldman, psychologist, University of Massachusetts. He said, "Sixty percent of people lie at least once in a ten-minute conversation." Isn't that amazing - a ten-minute conversation? You're talking to somebody in the hallway, and if you're talking for ten minutes, you're going to lie at least once. They said, "On average, it was more like two to three times." A book was written some years ago in the early 90s, "The Day America Told the Truth." And in that book they said, "Ninety-one percent of Americans lie routinely, and eighty-six percent of kids lie to their parents." It's awful, lying. Our world is just overrun with lies. And written in stone by the finger of God is commandment number nine, "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor." You shall not lie against your neighbor. Now, in the Webster's dictionary, he defines lying this way: "To speak falsely, or utter untruths knowingly, as with intent to deceive, to express what is false and convey a false impression."
