If you have your Bible, please turn to Exodus chapter 20. We're in a series on the Ten Commandments. And today we want to talk about the sixth commandment, and I've entitled this message, "The Heart of Murder."
Very interesting as you read in the Bible, Genesis chapter 3, one of the most important passages in all the Scripture, Genesis 3 tells us about the fall of man. It tells us about the sin of Adam and Eve. It tells us how sin came into the world and death through sin. So, death spread to all men because all sinned. That happened in Genesis chapter 3. And in Genesis chapter 4 we read about the two oldest boys of Adam and Eve, Cain, the oldest, and Abel, his brother, and how they present their offerings to the LORD in the course of time. And God had regard for Abel and his offering but didn't have regard for Cain and his offering. Because Abel came God's way, he came with a blood sacrifice, and Cain came his own way. He came with the fruit of the cursed ground. And Cain was very angry at God, and he takes out his anger on his brother, Abel, and he kills him. Right on the heels of the very first sin with Adam and Eve, you have murder that hits the human race.
Well, in Exodus chapter 20, as God is giving the Ten Commandments to the people and to Moses, and He's writing these. We've called this series, "Written in Stone," because the Ten Commandments were written on two tablets of stone, written, as the Scripture says, by the very finger of God. And when we come to the sixth commandment. The sixth commandment says, "You shall not kill." That is the sixth commandment. Kill in the King James; murder, which is a better translation of that Hebrew word ratsach, "You shall not murder." And so, we want to talk today about "The Heart of Murder."
