I read about a woman - this was years and years ago - this woman was a very powerful, wealthy woman of means and social prominence. She wanted to have a book written about her life and about her history and about her genealogy. So, she hired this man to write her story and to research her family. And the man came back to her after some time and said, "I don't know how to tell you this, but there's some bad things in your family's history." She said, "What?" He said, "You have a great grandfather who was sent to prison at Sing-Sing for being a murderer, and he was electrocuted in the electric chair at Sing-Sing Prison in New York." She said, "That's horrible. I didn't know that." She said, "Well, you can't write that in my story because that would sully my good name, knowing that I had a great-grandfather like that." She said, "You need to come up with something else to tell that story." So, this is what he wrote in her book: "One of her great grandfathers occupied the chair of applied electricity in one of America's best-known institutions. He was very much attached to his position and literally died in the harness." She went to great lengths to protect her name. The Bible says in Proverbs 22, verse 1, "A good name is more desired than great riches." Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 7:1, "A good name is better than expensive perfume."
So, let me ask you, do you have good name, a good reputation at school, in the community, at work, in the church? Do you have a good name? Do people associate your name with godliness? With honesty and integrity? With responsibility? With trust? Worthiness? You know, when the disciples asked Jesus, "Lord, teach us to pray as John also taught his disciples to pray."
