If you have your Bible, please turn to Exodus chapter 20. We're starting a brand-new series today on the Ten Commandments, and I have never preached on the Ten Commandments before. We're calling this series "Written in Stone," because the Ten Commandments were those that were written in stone by the very finger of God. It has well been said that the Ten Commandments are one of the most, if not the most, important pieces of religious literature the world has ever known. But, you know, there are people that don't like the Ten Commandments. Why is that? Because they don't want anyone to tell them what to do, not even God.
I ran across some quotes this morning as I was preparing this message and finishing up with it. Alan Dershowitz, the Harvard legal scholar, said that the Ten Commandments don't belong in the hearts and minds of contemporary Americans. Liberal theologian, John Shelby Spong, called the Ten Commandments immoral. And Richard Dawkins, the famous atheist, who wrote "The God Delusion," said, "Well, the Ten Commandments are just weird." Let me just tell you, the Ten Commandments are not weird, or immoral, or irrelevant, or harmful. They're critical for a society to function and to flourish.
Now, Deuteronomy chapter 9 verse 10 says that God wrote the Ten Commandments with His finger. And if some of you have seen the old movie, "The Ten Commandments" with Charleston Heston, we know that when God spoke to Moses on the mountain and wrote on the mountain, wrote with the finger of God, but His voice came out in fire and etched the Ten Commandments on those two tablets of stone. The Ten Commandments weren't written in pencil on a piece of paper. They're not written in the sand, subject to erasure or erosion. They're etched in stone.
