Introduction

A. We are about to enter an exciting time.

B. It is also a time of spiritual warfare.

C. Our greatest weapon is prayer.

Ill. Ron dunn: ''prayer is the secret weapon of the kingdom of god. It is like a missle that can be fired toward any spot on earth, travel undetected at the speed of thought, and hit its target every time. It can even be delayed with a delayed detonation device. Jesus said in john 17:20 ''i do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in me through their word.''

D. John 17 is known as the priestly prayer. Actually it is the real lord's prayer. The one in the sermon on the mount is the model prayer.

E. The importance of prayer is stressed in the life of jesus.

1. Time and again we find jesus separating himself for the purpose of prayer.

2. We also find him praying constantly for those he loves.

F. Tonight i want to share with you some principles of prayer as we prepare for a tremendous week.

I. Prayer is for all believers.

A. We think of prayer and we immediately think of men and women who were given to powerful prayers.

1. Martin luther: ''i have so much to do today i shall spend the first three hours in prayer.

2. David brainerd: prayed in knee deep snow so long and so vigorously the snow around him melted, and he caught pheumonia and died.

3. Apostle james: ''old camel knees'' according to tradition james spent so much time praying his knees resembled the calloused knees of a camel.''

B. Because of these wonderful stories we determine to leave prayer for the ''professionals''; a few elite believers who can attain this spiritual status.

C. We need to discover prayer is not a religious exercise for the elite--it is a human necessity.

1. We have to fight tremendous battles.

2. We are outnumbered, overwhelmed, and at great risk.

3. We need god.
