Proposition - We must be ready to share the essence of the Gospel when we have the opportunity.

INTRODUCTION:

Essence - 1 a: the permanent as contrasted with the accidental element of being b: the individual, real, or ultimate nature of a thing especially as opposed to its existence.
c: the most significant element, quality, or aspect of a thing or person.

Philosophically essence is our whatness - what we are.

Web sites - The essence of romance, the essence of Korean food, the essence of French painting and so on.

Context - Peter and John on the way to the temple, by diving appointment meet a lame man. Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit takes the man by the hand, and through the power of Christ, the man is healed, instantly.

The man has never stood on his own, he has never walked, ran, or been able to leap. He does them all - he is praising God for his healing. This gathers a crowd who stare in amazement at what has happened.

Peter takes the opportunity to preach the Gospel. This sermon is similar in some ways to his first sermon in chap. 2, but there are some differences. Peter does a masterful job of sharing the essence, the heart of the Gospel.

I) IT'S ALL ABOUT JESUS - VS. 12-13

One of my favorite praise songs goes - it's all about you, Jesus. And all this is for you and the glory of name, it's not about me, as if you should do things my way.

Peter begins his message by saying - it's all about Jesus - not John and I, not the other disciples.

Vs. 12-13 It would have been very easy for Peter to grab the limelight.

Instead, he put the spotlight on Jesus!

Vs. 13 The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had glorified His servant Jesus.

The God of their ancestors was a miracle working God - he was Jehovah ...
