i. introduction

a. if you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?

1. too often we worry more about changing others than we do ourselves.

2. personal change is a necessary part of a growing life.

b. a wasted life is one that is never willing to change.

1. ill. the prayer of serenity:

2. we need to change in order to stay fresh.

ill. i was talking to a business man in our church the other day. he was talking about growth and change. companies that cease to grow stagnate he said. everyone suffers. the employees , the customers, and the suppliers. the same is true in churches. churches that cease to grow stagnate. everyone suffers. people who cease to grow stagnate also. everyone suffers.



c. most of us are interested in change.

1. the popularity of books, seminars, and products related to change are indicative of that fact.

2. the problem is change is often temporary.

3. change is often temporary, because most of the attention is given to the exterior, the behavior.

4. lasting change must begin on the inside.

5. lasting change is a work of god.

d. genesis 32:24-30 outlines the process god uses to bring about lasting change in our lives.

1. genesis 32 shows us how god can change us to become the kinds of persons we have always wanted to be.

2. the incident in jacob's life was a real turning point.

3. jacob had been somewhat shifty. even his name means ''schemer'' or ''cheater''.

4. jacob became israel through the transformation that took place in his life. the cheater became a prince. e. the message of genesis 32 is very encouraging.

1. the message says we don't have to stay in the rut we are in. god will help us change.

2. how does it happen? what does a wrestling match with an angel have to do with me today?
