When the phone rings in the middle of the night... it's always an alarming thing. But when you answer the phone and the voice on the other side is in an all-out panic, it makes it even more intense.
I'll never forget, just a few months after moving to Tennessee, we experienced what that was like. At the time, we were living in Hendersonville... and one night the phone rang, and my buddy Jeff was calling me in a panic. He said, "You need to seek shelter immediately... because the storm is coming!"
Now, in that moment, I'll be honest... I didn't take his warning very seriously... because already, we had heard rumor after rumor about big storms that were coming... in fact, just the day before this call, I was sort of making fun of how these fine folks in Tennessee would straight up cancel school if there was even a remote chance of bad weather. I had never lived in a place that would cancel school because it was raining too hard...
So, when I received that phone call, I wasn't as concerned as I probably should have been... But then Jeff told me this... he said, "I'm watching the radar... and there's a tornado that's coming directly at your house. You need to get underground... and prepare for the storm... because it's coming!"
When I heard those words, and sensed the intensity in his voice... I grabbed the kids... my wife grabbed the dogs and some waters, and we prepared for what we knew was coming. Now-thankfully, we didn't take a direct hit that day... but many people did... and some were prepared for the storm, and other weren't.
