Introduction

A. Opening illustration: ''they were Watching the skies--and the internet-- For a sign. They found one. As comet Hale-bopp grew bright, the 39 members Of heaven's gate descended into Darkness. They did it quietly, in a rich California suburb called rancho Santa fe. Orchestrated by a spectral Former choir director; their suicides To liberate them. His promise? That by Dying, they would ascend on a cloud Of light to a higher place.

B. Again america was stunned by the News account that 39 people had Taken their lives in a cultic ritual.

1. For many there were flashbacks To the guyana tragedy in 1978 When 914 followers of the cultic Leader jim jones followed him to Their deaths.

2. Like the followers of jones, the Disciples of marshall Applewhite did what they did in Response to religious beliefs That were perverted and Confusing.



C. Today, i want us to do three things.

1. Look at what the bible says About groups of this nature.

2. Look at the characteristics of Cultic groups like ''heaven's Gate.

3. Look at ways to avoid the cultic Trap.

I. What the bible says about ''heaven's Gate'' and other cults. I john 4:1-6.

A. The bible says there will be many False prophets coming into the world.

1. I john 4:1

2. Jude 4 says, ''for there are Certain men crept in unawares.''

Ill. Jude is saying that false Prophets and false teachers Will creep unrecognized into The fellowship of the church. That is why we screen teachers.

3. Ii peter 2:1 says, ''but there were Also false prophets also among The people, even as there shall Be among you, who privily shall Bring in damnable heresies.''

4. Matthew 7:15 jesus warned, ''Beware of false prophets, which Come to you in sheep's clothing, But inwardly they are ravening Wolves.''

5. Matthew 24:11 jesus warns, ''There will be false prophets Who will seek to deceive many.''
