Admiral byrd expedition to the south pole. The original plan was for he and 2 other men to spend an arctic night With their scientific observations trying to see what they could find Out about life in that cold part of the world.

The plan was aborted When the supply plane crashed and only enough supplies for one man Were retrieved. Byrd decided to be that man. He assigned himself to an 11' x 15' hut dug deep into the snow where he was to stay for the arctic Night. Byrd thought it would be neat and fun to have this time alone, so He could focus on the scientific experiments without any distractions. But as the days passed he became overwhelmed with loneliness. He Became ill from the gas fumes emitted by his lantern and stove. He Suffered great agony and stress.

He recorded the temperature on one Day to be 72 degrees below zero. The fumes began to make him sick again, So he turned off the lantern and stove and went without heat for Three days. The only light he used was a candle. It became apparent That if he was not rescued he would not be able to make it through the Winter. He thought help would come after calling rescuers on his Radio, but they did not come. He wrote, ''as the days went by and Stretched into weeks he realized that he would not make it through the Winter and he was going to die.'' when he realized in his own heart that Hope was gone, though he was ultimately rescued, he sat down and Wrote in his diary these words: ''i come to the realization that there is No hope; that there are only a few things in this life that are Worth living for. For only two things matter: the affection and Understanding of my family.'' this was the only thing admiral byrd could Think about when he thought about dying.
