Alexander III of Macedon... lived in the year 300 BC. He was later known as Alexander the Great because he conquered most of the known world in his lifetime... [Asia Minor, Egypt, India, Persia, and Syria]

Alexander's best friend went by the name of Cleitus... he was the son of his father's nurse... They grew up together, went to school together, and played together every day. They also went on to fight together, side-by-side, in many battles, as Alexander's armies were conquering country after country.

In fact, in one battle, Cleitus chopped a guy's arm off... as this man was preparing to kill Alexander-& Alexander never forgot that. His friend Cleitus saved his life.

One day, Alexander organized a banquet in India, for his top soldiers... and at this banquet they celebrated victories in the past and also heard Alexander's plans for future battles. Very quickly into the night, everyone at the party was drunk... so when Alexander gave orders to his best friend Cleitus... and Cleitus didn't like those orders, he responded in an inappropriate way... and left Alexander feeling disrespected in front of his men.

So, what did he do? He threw an apple at Cleitus' head. At that point, the other members of the party tried to intervene, but it didn't matter... At this point, Alexander the Great was angry and embarrassed... and he wasn't satisfied with hitting his friend with an apple, so you know what he did? He grabbed a javelin spear that was resting in the corner... and he threw that spear directly through Cleitus' heart... killing his best friend, instantly.

As the story is told... once everything deescalated and Alexander realized what he had done... he was overcome with remorse and regret and fell into a deep depression, realizing, there was nothing he could do... that would bring his best friend back to life.
