I heard about a Sunday School teacher who was trying to illustrate to her boys and girls the dangers of drinking alcohol. So she filled up two glasses, one with water and one with alcohol. Then she pulled out some earthworms she had dug up and dropped some of them into the water. Well, the worms just swam around that water; had a great time. Then she dropped some earthworms into that glass of alcohol and thoseearthworms curled up and died. She said, "Now boys and girls, what does this teach us?" One little boy spoke up and said, "I know what it teaches. If you have worms drink a lot of alcohol."

Introduction:

Paul is seeking to set in order the virtue of love above all other virtues in the church of Corinth. They were so divided in all areas of the church, and one of the main areas of division was the communication from the pulpit! They sounded like a bunch of wild people all trying to speak in tongues at the same time with no interpreter, and it was hindering the church from growing. The new people that would visit would be scared to stay because they could not understand what was being said, and Paul has to set in order the activity of speaking in an unknown tongue!

14 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
Prophecy may involve predicting future events, but its main purpose is to communicate God's message to people, providing insight, warning, correction, and encouragement.

Paul is continuing the theme of allowing love to be shone from every Christian. The Corinthian Church was low on love, and was full of fussing, and bickering with each other!
